Oxford vs Cambridge: Choosing the Right University for Your Profile
The Oxford or Cambridge decision should begin with course structure, subject fit, entry requirements, assessment style and the student's academic strengths. Courses with similar names can differ significantly in content and selection process, so a strong application starts by understanding what each university will actually assess.
Oxford
Oxford applications for 2027 entry are submitted through UCAS by 6pm UK time on 15 October 2026. Depending on the course, applicants may need an admissions test and may also be required to submit written work. Oxford uses TMUA, ESAT or TARA for relevant courses, while Law uses LNAT and Medicine uses UCAT. Shortlisted applicants are interviewed online in December.
Cambridge
Cambridge applicants also apply through UCAS by the same 15 October deadline, followed by submitting the My Cambridge Application form. Some applicants may need to provide a transcript. For 2027 entry, Cambridge uses TMUA for Computer Science, Economics and Mathematics; ESAT for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Engineering, Natural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine; LNAT for Law; and UCAT for Medicine. Some other subjects use college assessments. STEP remains relevant to Mathematics and is normally taken after an offer as part of the offer conditions.

Many students benefit from beginning in G11 or its equivalent, with more intensive application work continuing through the months before the October deadline.
