About the TMUA
The Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA) assesses mathematical problem-solving and reasoning for applicants to selected Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science and related courses at leading UK universities.
The TMUA is used by universities to differentiate between highly qualified candidates in competitive programmes.
Maximum Score: 9.0
Each paper is scored out of 20, and the total score is scaled to a range from 1.0 to 9.0
Format: 2 papers
Paper 1: Applications of Mathematical Knowledge (20 MCQs)

Test Duration: 2 hours and 30 minutes

What is considered a good TMUA score?
For international students, a score of 7.0 or above is generally recommended when applying for competitive programmes.

Oxbridge applicants must normally take TMUA in October. Candidates only applying to other universities may take TMUA in either October or January.

The TMUA consists of two 75-minute papers, each containing 20 multiple-choice questions.
Paper 1 — Applications of Mathematical Knowledge assesses your ability to apply mathematical knowledge in unfamiliar situations.
Paper 2 — Mathematical Reasoning assesses mathematical reasoning and elementary logic.
The full test lasts 2 hours 30 minutes. Calculators are not permitted.

There is no universal TMUA pass mark or score that guarantees admission. Candidates receive one overall score on a scale from 1.0 to 9.0, and universities normally consider the result alongside the wider application.
What constitutes a competitive score therefore depends on the university, course and applicant cohort. Rather than treating one number as a fixed target, preparation should focus on maximising performance across both papers and addressing the specific weaknesses limiting your score.
