How Our 1-to-1 ESAT Tutoring Works: Learn From Oxbridge Graduates
At UniWise, our 1-to-1 ESAT tutoring programme is designed to help you achieve your target score through personalised instruction and tailored study plans. Here’s what you can expect:
Module-Specific Diagnostic: We begin with the exact modules required for the student's university choices and assess performance across the relevant ESAT specification, identifying conceptual gaps, problem-solving weaknesses and timing constraints.
Targeted Preparation Plan: Tutoring is prioritised around the areas with the greatest scope for improvement. Students do not spend equal time on every topic simply because it appears in the specification.
Timed Problem-Solving: Students practise applying familiar Mathematics and Science content to unfamiliar problems under ESAT time pressure. Tutors work on efficient routes, no-calculator technique, question selection and avoiding recurring errors.
Full-Test Practice & Review: As preparation progresses, students complete timed modules and, where appropriate, full three-module simulations. Results are reviewed to adjust subsequent tutoring and independent practice.
Last but not least, our tutors are top Natural Sciences and Engineering graduates from Oxbridge. They are specialists with firsthand experience taking similar tests and understand what is required to succeed. They can help you achieve the same, so you can attend the school of your dreams!
Let our tutors provide you with a competitive edge for ESAT, boosting your confidence and scores.
ESAT Preparation Across All Five Modules
Your ESAT tutor will focus preparation on the modules required for your chosen university courses, with lesson time prioritised according to your current strengths and areas for improvement.
ESAT Preparation: Which ESAT Modules Do You Need?
Every candidate takes Mathematics 1. Most candidates then take two further modules, but the required combination depends on the university and course. UAT-UK explicitly advises applicants to check the modules required before booking. Examples for 2027 entry:
Imperial and UCL requirements vary by course. Applicants should always verify the current university and UAT-UK requirements before booking.
About the ESAT
The Engineering and Science Admissions Test is used by Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London and UCL for selected Engineering, Science and related undergraduate courses. The ESAT contains five possible modules. Mathematics 1 is compulsory for every candidate, while most applicants take two additional modules according to their course requirements.
Understanding the ESAT's structure and demands is crucial for effective preparation and achieving the best possible results.
Maximum Score: 9.0
The total score from all parts is scaled to a range from 1.0 to 9.0
Format: 5 modules (Most candidates are required to choose 3 of the 5)
[Mandatory] Option 1: Mathematics 1 (27 MCQ)
Option 2: Biology (27 MCQs)
Option 3: Chemistry (27 MCQs)
Option 4: Physics (27 MCQs)
Option 5: Mathematics 2 (27 MCQs)
Test Duration: For most candidates, 2 hours (40 minutes for each module)

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Your tutor will be matched to the ESAT modules you need, your current performance and your target courses. UniWise works with Oxbridge graduates and subject specialists in areas including Engineering, Natural Sciences, Mathematics and the physical sciences.
Where possible, we match students with tutors whose academic background is closely aligned with the modules they are preparing for.
-
Mathematics 1 is compulsory for every ESAT candidate. Most applicants then take two additional modules from Mathematics 2, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, depending on the university and course they are applying to.
For example, Cambridge Engineering and Oxford Engineering Science currently require Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2 and Physics. Other courses, including Cambridge Natural Sciences and Oxford Biomedical Sciences, allow different combinations.
Your UniWise tutor will focus preparation on the modules relevant to your application.
-
Yes. UniWise ESAT tutoring is delivered through personalised 1-to-1 online lessons.
This allows us to match students with the most suitable subject specialist regardless of location, while keeping lessons flexible around school commitments and the ESAT test date.
-
The appropriate preparation period depends on your existing Mathematics and Science foundation, the modules you need to take and your current performance under timed conditions.
We normally begin by identifying conceptual gaps, problem-solving weaknesses and timing issues before recommending an appropriate preparation plan. Students requiring substantial improvement will generally benefit from starting earlier than those who already have strong subject knowledge and mainly need test-specific practice.
-
Yes. Your preparation can be concentrated on the modules where you need the most support.
Some students require balanced preparation across all three modules. Others already have a strong foundation in one subject and benefit from directing more lesson time towards Mathematics 2, Physics, Chemistry or Biology.
Your tutoring plan can be adjusted as your timed practice results develop.
-
There is no universal pass mark or single overall ESAT score. You receive a separate score for each module you take, reported from 1.0 to 9.0. Universities consider these scores alongside the rest of your application.
A sensible target therefore depends on your course, university and the competitiveness of the applicant pool. We recommend focusing on maximising performance across each required module rather than treating one number as a guaranteed threshold.
For international students, a score of 7.0 or above is generally recommended when applying for top programmes.
-
Yes. UniWise works extensively with students in Singapore, including those following Singapore-Cambridge A-Levels, IB, British A-Levels and international-school curricula.
Lessons are delivered online and can be scheduled around local time. Preparation is adapted to the student's existing Mathematics and Science curriculum as well as the ESAT modules required for their chosen courses.
Our ESAT tutoring is also available to students internationally.
