Oxford, Cambridge & Imperial Interviews 2026/27: Dates, Formats, Questions & Preparation
Last updated: 11 October 2026 | For applicants applying in 2026 for 2027 university entry
After October admissions tests, interview preparation becomes the next priority for many applicants. Oxford and Cambridge use academic interviews as a central part of selection, while Imperial College London uses interviews or interview-style assessments across subjects such as Aeronautics, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Economics, Finance and Data Science.
The formats differ. Oxford interviews for 2027 entry are online in December 2026. Cambridge’s main interview period is 7–18 December 2026, with format varying by College. Imperial is department-specific: some courses use live online academic interviews, Civil Engineering uses an online video submission, Materials Science and Engineering combines an interview with a group task, and Computing interviews are not standard.
This guide focuses on non-Medicine interviews, including Oxford Economics and Management, PPE, Engineering and Law; Cambridge Economics, Engineering, Law and Environment, Law, and Economics; and popular Imperial Engineering and quantitative courses.
Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial interviews at a glance
What are interviewers actually assessing?
At Oxford and Cambridge, the interview is designed to test academic potential. You may be given an unfamiliar problem, argument, passage, graph or scenario and asked to work through it.
Interviewers value clear reasoning, sound assumptions and thoughtful responses to hints. They want to see you work through unfamiliar problems and develop your arguments.
Imperial interviews are more course-specific, but Engineering departments commonly assess problem-solving, mathematical or scientific thinking and motivation. Some also ask about your personal statement, projects or why Imperial.
Oxford interviews for 2027 entry
Oxford confirms that shortlisted applicants will be interviewed online in December 2026 using Microsoft Teams, although some interviews might take place in the week commencing 30 November. You should refer to the live timetable.
Shortlisted applicants may have more than one interview and may be interviewed by more than one college. Additional interviews are a normal part of Oxford’s process.
-
Economics and Management interviews are academic, not business-style job interviews. Oxford’s own sample material shows how a topical question can quickly become an Economics problem about labour markets, competition, incentives or government intervention.
How to prepare: Work with an experienced UniWise Oxford Economics and Management interview consultant to practise turning broad real-world questions into analysis: define the mechanism, identify competing explanations, state assumptions and consider what evidence would distinguish between them. Your consultant can challenge your first explanation and help you become more precise when the discussion moves from opinion to economic reasoning.
-
Oxford PPE tutors look for clear analytical thinking, argument construction, flexibility in considering alternative views and interest across Philosophy, Politics and Economics. Prior formal study of all three is not required.
How to prepare: Work with an experienced UniWise Oxford PPE interview consultant to practise making a precise claim, defending it, identifying its limits and adapting when the interviewer introduces a counterexample or new assumption. Your consultant can also test whether you can move comfortably between verbal argument, diagrams and simple mathematical reasoning where relevant.
-
Oxford Engineering interviews test enthusiasm for Engineering together with mathematical and physical reasoning. A simple scenario can develop into a technical discussion involving calculations.
How to prepare: Work with a UniWise Oxbridge Engineering interview consultant to refresh the Mathematics and Physics you may need to use spontaneously, then practise unfamiliar problems aloud. Your consultant can press you to make assumptions explicit, use diagrams efficiently and respond to hints without losing the structure of your reasoning.
-
Oxford Law interviews assess reasoning, communication and intellectual flexibility rather than prior legal knowledge. Official sample questions often begin with an ordinary concept, then use hypothetical cases to expose weaknesses in an initial definition.
How to prepare: Work with an experienced UniWise Oxbridge Law interview consultant using a definition → application → counterexample → refinement structure. LNAT helps with close reading and argument analysis, while spoken practice with your consultant trains you to refine a rule as the facts change and defend the distinction you are making.
Other Oxford subject interviews
The same tutorial-style principle applies more widely. History-related interviews may use a short passage or submitted written work; Physics and Mathematics can centre on technical problem-solving; humanities interviews may develop an argument or source through follow-up questions.

Cambridge interviews for 2027 entry
Cambridge’s main interview period for October applicants is 7–18 December 2026. Most invitations are sent in November, although some arrive in early December. Winter Pool interviews can take place around mid to late January 2027.
Unlike Oxford, Cambridge arrangements vary by College. For 2027 entry, Cambridge currently lists Churchill, Emmanuel, King’s and Selwyn as all in-person, including applicants based overseas. Other Colleges split by location: Corpus Christi, Peterhouse, Robinson, Sidney Sussex and Trinity Hall generally interview UK-based applicants in person and applicants outside the UK online, while Trinity and Pembroke currently allow overseas applicants to choose online or in-person.
-
Cambridge Economics combines mathematical and economic reasoning, with TMUA used before interview for 2027 entry. College formats differ: current guidance from some Colleges includes two interviews, and some use short applied quantitative exercises before one interview.
How to prepare: Work with a UniWise Cambridge Economics interview consultant to interpret graphs and quantitative information, explain economic mechanisms and apply mathematical ideas to unfamiliar situations. Your consultant can vary the problem format so you do not overfit your preparation to one College’s published example.
-
Cambridge Engineering applicants take ESAT before interview. Because the course is broad in its first two years, interview preparation should focus on mathematical and physical fundamentals rather than premature specialisation.
How to prepare: Work with a UniWise Cambridge Engineering interview consultant on unfamiliar mathematical and physical problems, drawing diagrams and explaining why each step follows.
-
Cambridge Law requires LNAT for entry, but the interview remains a separate academic assessment. The interview assesses logical reasoning, interpretation and evaluation of arguments, clarity of expression, intellectual flexibility and interest in Law. Prior legal knowledge is not required.
How to prepare: Work with a UniWise Cambridge Law interview consultant to analyse texts, rules and hypothetical situations aloud. Your consultant can introduce new facts or counterexamples so you practise identifying competing principles, applying them consistently and changing your position when a distinction no longer holds.
-
Environment, Law, and Economics is the renamed course previously known as Land Economy. Interviews typically involve 1–2 academic interviews, lasting around 40–60 minutes in total. Expect analytical discussions and unfamiliar scenarios involving economics, law, public policy and environmental issues, with emphasis on logical reasoning, critical thinking and defending your arguments.
How to prepare: Work with a UniWise Cambridge Environment, Law, and Economics interview consultant on mixed problems spanning economics, law, public policy and environmental issues, with emphasis on logical thought, trade-offs and explaining how rules or incentives may change behaviour.
Other Cambridge subject interviews
The same supervision-style principle applies to interviews for other Cambridge courses.

How do I prepare for my university admissions interviews?
1. Refresh your application and academic foundations
Make a one-page map of the ideas, readings, projects and claims in your UCAS application. Be prepared to discuss them in greater depth and defend your conclusions. For quantitative subjects, revisit the Mathematics, Physics or Economics concepts you may need to apply spontaneously, particularly those relevant to your chosen course.
2. Complete a diagnostic mock
Start with a diagnostic interview that includes unfamiliar questions, follow-up challenges and hints. Identify your main areas for improvement, whether in subject knowledge, reasoning aloud, communication or confidence under pressure. Use the feedback to prioritise your subsequent preparation.
3. Practise thinking aloud
Explain what you notice, the assumptions you are making and the reasoning behind your chosen approach. Practise responding to hints, counterexamples and changing assumptions. If your initial approach fails, reassess the problem and explain your revised reasoning. Interviewers are interested in your intellectual process, including your ability to recognise and correct mistakes.
4. Train by subject
Preparation should reflect the academic demands of your chosen course. Economics applicants should practise quantitative and causal reasoning; Law applicants should work through definitions, rules and hypothetical cases. Engineering applicants need mathematical and physical modelling, whilst PPE and Environment, Law, and Economics applicants should develop structured arguments across competing perspectives.
5. Finish with realistic full mocks
Complete full-length mock interviews featuring unfamiliar material and challenging follow-up questions. Review each session for reasoning quality, communication, subject knowledge, responsiveness to hints and composure under pressure. Once your College or department confirms its interview arrangements, adjust subsequent mocks to reflect the expected format.

Interview preparation for Singapore students: A-Levels, IB and National Service
If you are applying from Singapore, December interviews can arrive immediately after a demanding examination period. Your preparation should therefore be planned around the qualification you are taking and any National Service commitments, rather than copied from a generic UK timetable.
If you are sitting Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Levels, the interview period follows closely after the A-Level examination season. Work with your interview consultant before exams to establish the likely academic weaknesses and keep preparation light during the busiest revision period. After your final papers, shift quickly into spoken problem-solving and realistic mocks. Share every interview invitation with your UniWise team so the plan can be adjusted around exact dates and College requirements.
If you are sitting the November-session IB: your final examinations and UK interview preparation can overlap even more tightly. Use an earlier diagnostic to identify the subject material and interview skills that need the most attention, then work with your UniWise interview consultant to restart intensive practice as soon as the examination timetable allows. For online interviews, rehearse with the same camera, microphone, paper or whiteboard setup you intend to use.
If you are serving National Service or reapplying during NS: time away from school can reduce fluency even when your underlying academic ability remains strong. Work with your UniWise team to review the previous application, admissions-test results and any interview feedback, then use a fresh mock with your interview consultant to identify whether the highest-return work is subject recall, explaining reasoning aloud, using diagrams or responding to academic follow-up questions. Singapore is eight hours ahead of GMT in December, so check every interview time carefully and plan leave or duty arrangements as early as possible.
